粘土は、気むずかしい
全体が「均一に」
乾き、縮小し、膨張し、収縮する
はずが
裏底だけ、取り残される
が
食卓では、すてきなキャンバス

Flat slabs of clay are difficult to handle.
As with drying shrinkage, firing shrinkage
can cause warping and cracking.
But they function as a canvas for food!

粘土の塊をまるく、したら
ゆっくり開いてのばしてく.....そして
粘土をよせて、とじていく
いくらか乾いて、針で切る....そして
粘土を足して、蓋の受け

手のひらで、そぉっと包む　(H=6cm)

I was asked to make a ceramic box.
The request was that it should feel warm.

鉄釉・水色に-Iron:Tricky Colorant

粘土の塊をくりぬいた猪口
数年前に、無釉で焼き締め
次に、鉄（「10%」）釉かけて焼き
今回は、道具土でつくったサヤで
薪の燃えさし粒に埋め、蓋して(「還元」)
「温度が低い」窯の一番下で焼いてみた


火の雰囲気で
こうも変わるか
そういえば
青磁、も鉄釉だ

This cup was fired unglazed a few years ago.
It was fired again with iron glaze.
It's been fired again with charcoal bits from wood stove
in reduction. image: After(left)/Before(right)
The light blue and the surface--I love it!

はじめてのボタン-First Buttons

生からいきなり
焼いたが、ほら
ぴかぴかの顔 　
（釉薬：右回り・turquoise blue/Waikiki beach sand/dark green/Izu sand/sugar white）

ダークグリーン
もう、さようなら
月桃紙の欠片に
刺し子糸で縫う
　
The five buttons came out of the kiln almost perfectly.
This way I can test new glazes, which are wearable as well.
Actually I made 1,000 pieces last week.
The dark green one was sold yesterday.
I sewed it on Okinawan grass paper with Sashiko thread
before saying "Sayonara".

Fired in the kiln three times
these blue hues touched me finally

Glaze over glaze
firing after firing
something unexpected and
surprising happens every time

皿のこびりつき-A Clean Fire

素焼きの窯で
すっかり元通り

汚れ、とみずに
味とみるほうだ
が、
これも悪くない、っか

The residue of the oil or tough food stains
don't usually bother me.
They remind me of hot baked dishes in the past.
People don't always feel the same way.
I occasionally bisque fire cups and plates to burn off the 'flavor?'.

採取土石を砕いて
とにかく焼いてみる（下）
釉薬に調合してみる（上）








そのテストピースを
3グラム、の粘土で
ボタンにした、ら楽しそうだ

Why not buttons for testing glazes
as Lucie Rie did?
Each piece weighs much lighter than those I have made.
And what's more, . . I can sew and wear 'Earth Colors'.

黒い酸化コバルトの粉
ほんのわずか水で溶く
それでも「青」は力強い
ので
かなあり薄いのんと
とんでもなく薄いのを
筆に含ませにじませる

頓着せずに、ひゅっひゅっ

乾いたら、透明釉をスプレー
酸化銅の緑釉二種・筆でおく

Cobalt Oxide gives various shades of blue when fired.
Grab a paintbrush and let your imagination run wild.

Imawano Kiyoshiro died at 58.
He is an exception among "rock" singers (,if any) in Japan.
Who else tries to shout against things not right?

「のび」がいい土-Clay : Lightness to the Touch

なめらか・で
こし・がある、と
土は、すーっ
うすくのびてく

午後に、ひいて
翌朝、けずって
庇の下で乾かし
翌日には素焼き

そんな乱暴な！こと
も、してみちゃいたく
なる、益子の土である

This 'Mashiko' clay is so smooth and tough that
I could thin the wall to the point where it still has the strength to stand up.

炎のしわざ-Glaze & Flashing

籾殻や貝殻といっしょに
サヤづめして窯で焚くと
土の表面が溶かされて、艶
土の鉄分は還元されて、火色

この碗（右上）、毎日、つかってる

こんどの窯では、中だけ
白っぽい釉かけ、焼いてみよっと

I use this(upper right) bowl every day.
This time I am trying to fire a bowl,
which is glazed inside, in a saggar with seashells.

I don't have total control over the flashing outside
that are created by rice husk and seashells.

ロクロつぶやく-Wheel Says Something

不思議ナンだが
ロクロがきしんで
それが
「いいよ・いいよ」とか
「ほらみろ・ほらみろ」
って、聞こえて、っていうか
気がついたら、そうつぶやきながら
うすくうすく、土をのばしてる
「言葉」は、いつも違う気がする

When I throw, the wheel makes a noise.
It might sound raspy to some people, but not me.
When I notice, I am already repeating some words----
"IIYO, IIYO" that means 'Alright, Alright' or
"HORA-MIRO, HORA-MIRO" meaning "See, I told you so."
My fingers are raising and thinning the clay to them.

I was looking at the Momiji leaves,
which are opening like 'paa' (paper by opening hand) from 'goo'(rock by clenching fist)
in Jan-ken-poi game.
And I found this Tentou-mushi. Hi!

唐津はむずかしい-Clay Difficult to Throw

○○焼き、といわれる
土地の伝統的な「土」
で、茶わんをひいてみた

益子、は粘りがあって（下---削りが終わり、白化粧）
ろくろで、すーっとのびる
古伊賀、はごつごつ珪石（左上）

唐津、は、粘りがなくって（右上）
広げるとほろっと裂けちゃう

Texture refers to the “feel” or “tooth” of the clay.
I used three traditional clays--Mashiiko, Iga, and Karatsu.
Karatsu (upper right) was the most difficult to throw.

I am happy to hear from those who
brought my pieces home with them
and to see how they are getting along.
This Shisa (lion-dog guardian）, for example,
went out to enjoy SAKURA flower with Saeko.

ロクロ感覚-Turning the Wheel

電動ろくろは、もちろん
勝手に回転する、ので
まっすぐにのばしていく
とき、思わず息とめてる

ボールにバットをあわせる
「みたいな」スポーツ感覚、か
心の状態が、すぐさま映って
手びねりと違って、気持ちの
入れ替えを、待ってくれない

うまくいけば爽快、だ

It's fun to see a clay pot rising from a potter's wheel.
But the wheel is difficult to get along with.
It reflects the state of your mind from the beginning
and doesn't wait for you to change it.

It feels great when it goes well,
like when you swing the bat and it meets the ball.

小さな蓋物-Making Ceramic Urns

一日ひとつ、つくってみている
手ロクロに、粘土玉をころっとのせ
指先でひらいて、上へとのばしてく

しだいにまあるく、とじて
玉子、のようになったら、

ほどよく乾くのを、待って
手ロクロ回しながら針----
縫い針を、ワインのコルクに埋めた道具---で切る
身から蓋をはずして、ささえをつくり、
蓋のうらも、きれいにする

I hand-build an egg shaped one piece in the morning,
and cut out the lid with a needle in the afternoon.
I feel I am learning to quiet my mind.

京都の百貨店で、であった
Tuさんのてびねりの作品だ
伊豆の工房も、訪ねたっけ

Before starting to cook,
I usually choose serving plates and bowls......
It's adventurous to cook and visualize how my food will be spread out.

京都のYoさん、さっそく使ってくれて..........

器のいいとこが見えなくなっちゃいますねえ。
いいえ、食べ終わったときに「あら、そうだったのね」と
器の景色に気が付くのも楽しい瞬間ですよね-----」と

Thank you, Yoshimi-san, for sending me a photo of
sweets on my pieces, Ginko leaf and Mt.Fuji.
