The myoga ginger in the garden
had been well ready to grow buds
when we're leaving Japan.
I thought we would miss
the edible flower buds and
flavorful shoots this summer.
Wow, they've been waiting for us!

Lou drove us to Seward Park
on Lake Washington, where
they say we can see only the
sandstone bedrock
exposure in Seattle.

At Mt.Baker Starbucks,

about 60 miles east of Portland.

I was touched by the glacially
eroded summit area,
rocks and sand in the sunset.
It is an active volcano.
Now I have to go see
the morning outside.

4人とJixi、お茶をごちそうになる

It just happened, unexpected
meeting and a long life story
of the person, who started
this ceramics show

粘土板の縁を折り、ひっくり
返したらやらかくくぼんだ皿

Deep fried Saba or mackerel
with thick starchy sauce
(soy sauce/vinegar/chili/brown sugar
syrup), leek and myouga ginger.

糸蒟豆腐と佐渡の皿-Sado Island Plate

土石採取の記録 を見ると
佐渡島の旅は2002年7月
宿に穴窯があり佐渡の土
焼いてるという、その皿

I bought this plate in Sadogashima,
which was fired in Anagama-kiln.
The potter said he had so much
trouble finding adequate local clay.

深い釉薬にひとめ惚れ

Tさんの手びねりの器
伊東の窯も訪ねたっけ

Lunch for hot summer days
should be cold somen noodle.
Put stir-fried 'eringi' fungi/squid tentacles/spinach
seasoned with ginger and tobanjan on top of it.

ヒップカップ-Hip Cup & Body Pot

「蛙目粘土」つかってみよう、と
水加え塊つぶし練り上げ土づくり

風化花崗岩が湖沼に堆積した粘土
なめらかな土、素焼きでつるつる

I wanted to try Gairome clay,
which is composed of kaolinite
and fine-grained quartz and feldspar.

cup: 4.5cm H/150g


取っ手をどうしようかな、っと
初期に造ったポット目にはいり
そうだっ、ヒップにしよっ

What to do with the handle?
My eyes caught a tea pot with
a body-shaped handle, which I
made when i just started ceramics.
We have a well that never runs dry.

これは強いから、よく

Bergamot that grows in
my partial-shade garden
is sometimes replanted in
my friend's sunny garden.
The flower, full of life, came home.

花崗岩砂粒で釉薬-Granite Sand Glazes

日向山（ひなたやま）のてっぺん
怖くもきれいな風化花崗岩の、砂

「石溶かす」木灰/石灰/合成土灰
加えれば釉薬になるはず、と実験
砂を乳鉢で擂って、アルカリ加え

Weathered granite sand consists
largely of well-sorted grains of
quartz with other minerals.


砂+ペタライト---黒雲母？そのまま残る
砂+福島長石+合成土灰---完璧な釉薬
砂+木灰---マット調だが、なんとか溶けている
砂+木灰+ペタライト---さらに釉に厚みが加わる

This time I did some testing with 7 glazes,
finely ground sand (silica)+wood ash/whiting.....

思いっきり賞味期限切れ
本葛と冷凍庫の昨秋の栗

蕎麦蜂蜜+甜菜糖+塩+葛+水
適当、に加えて練り上げ型に

Mizu-Yokan is classic summer sweets.
Ingredients:
water+powdered arrowroot from Yoshino, Nara
buckwheat honey+beet sugar from Hokkaido+sea salt
chestnuts collected last fall




冷やしてレトロな角皿に
染め付けの筆跡柔らかい
古びて古びてなお、いい

Rice(white) topped with deep-fried pork/
sweet potato/onion cutlet, egg(yellow),
and wild mitsuba or Cryptotaenia(green)
in the large bowl(sky/deep sea blue+brown)

いただいてしまってあった
むかしの浴衣、粋で柔らか
袖ほどいてちくちく雨の日

On a rainy day
I pulled out an old nicely worn
yukata, summer cotton kimono,
and began to unstitch and remove
the sleeves to make them into dish cloth.

木の股にまたがって

山道、歩いてると
そんな木と出逢う
思わず抱いちゃう

There sometimes is a good tree for climbing,
which just looks comfortable to sit in.
I imagine myself leaning against its broad trunk.

モリスとアイスランド-Morris "Journey to Iceland"

「アイスランドへの旅」晶文社
1871年7月6日（ロンドン出発）
から9月7日までの37才の旅日記

馬で旅し、夜、テントで綴った
地形や気候のワクワクした描写

「........大きな溶岩塊.......
　やがて花がたくさん点在する砂地.....
　これも消え.....黒砂.....紫色になり.....
　とつぜん急斜面.....その色はインディアンレッド....」
「泥炭質の干上がった湿地」
「黄色味を帯びた白い濁った流れで硫黄の臭い」
「両側に玄武岩の巨大な崖」
「石炭ではなく....木の化石の一種だった...木は、ぽぷら、樺、そして榛の木...」

The pages are filled with vivid descriptions of the geology.

the pasta as it needs to simmer
for a minute or two in the clam sauce.

駅から高速道路のsubway
（横断地下道）くぐって
Thames 川に向かって８００m
公園（赤白茶の煉瓦のかけら
発見）抜けると　Morris が
晩年暮らした
Kelmscott House

　モリスがつくったフォントの活字
　や絵柄の木版。
　インクのにおいはもうしない。
　目の前のテムズ川のほとりからボートで
　CottswaldsのKelmscott Manorと行き来したらしい。

登山口に月の輪熊目撃〔6/29）情報
なるほどいろんな形の赤い種入り黒糞
神尾が弾く PAGANINI 小さく鳴らし

カラマツ林登り切る、あ、海だぁ
風化花崗岩断崖絶壁、怖くも美し


砂の斜面下り、見上げ、目が回る
拾った石は手の中でほろほろ崩れ
石英，長石、角閃石，雲母.........

八ヶ岳、甲斐駒ヶ岳は霧の中
根っ子に足かけ、慎重に下る
汗だく膝ガク、おもろかった

This 4 hour hike was exhausting,
but I was so satisfied to see/feel
what happens when granite is weathered.

あれっ親子丼？みたいな
鮭+茄子炒飯を盛り
半熟トマトオムレツ

それにしても、ごつごつざらざら
つるつるの丸い鉢、なら気楽だが
ま、この緊張感も好き（Fさん作）

This bowl, which a friend of mine made,
is far from smooth.
It gets me tense, or in other words,
I rather enjoy a good sense of tension,
every time I choose it.

辺境生物学、というらしい
極限環境にもはびこる生命

岩石砕いて微生物の培養？

水がはいりこんだり
地衣がとりついたり
たしかに、あやしい

I have been thinking rocks have nothing
to do with life except for lichen/moss.
They say some bacterial community might grow
from powdered rock in the culture medium.

This feels very familiar to me.
The atmosphere as a whole
silently awakes my soul.
That is something I have in mind
while I am sculpting a snufkin in clay.
Oh, let me hug you tight.

I'd rather not smooth the surface,
and just leave it rough.
The bottom happened to be curved,
and so I can even rock it like a cradle.

鳥取（民芸舘）-岩美（岩井窯）---

"Salmon and scallop salad on rice"
I bought this bowl (21cm diameter)
at Shussai Gama Pottery in Hikawa,
Shimane, Japan in 1994.
I like the combination of deep blue inside
and iron on the outside.
