ひとにぎりのギリシャの土
から、古代ギリシャへ
タイムトラベルしてみたら
こんなかたちになった

色と肌合いのイメージは
遺跡と
三方を海に囲まれたバルカン半島

color and the feel come from
the image of
ancient Greek ruins on
Balkan Peninsula
surrounded by the sea on three sides

はじまりは、いつものように
土石砕いて、釉薬テスト
started off with testing the rock glaze as usual

足の付け根にこの釉薬
this glaze applied around the joint

そもそもなんで
ハートに足がはえたら、なのか
即興のイメージ

Why "heart"?
a lump of clay shaped into this
"if the heart grew a foot" instinctly as usual

個展の荷造り。大小8個の衣装箱に詰めた。ら、夕方、作品を見たいと、ゲスト。
ちょうど、いくらか隙間ができた展示棚を掃除しているとこだった。

それが

粘土のかたまり・おしたりひっぱったり
さやのかたち・気がつくとでかい
さやの長さが30cm pod length
空洞の豆は3cm pea diameter

just started pinching and pulling a lump of clay
into a pod shape
Oh, it's quite long!

福島県南部白河地方栃木県北端部にかけて、
前期更新世（130---90万年前）の珪長質
火砕流堆積物が広く分布。火砕流の下には降下火砕物が存在し、
火砕流に先立って、プリニアン噴火（大量の軽石や火山灰を降下させる大規模な噴火）があった。
灰白色灰紫色の輝石デイサイト質溶結凝灰岩

あっ、こっちにも
いくらも離れていない那須町の
ふたつのテストピース

釉薬レシピ　glaze recipe B

釉薬は、珪酸と酸化アルミニウムをアルカリで融合させる。
マットな感じ（B）からつるつる（A）
glaze: produced by the fusion of silica with alumina by means of a flux. It can range in both visual and tactile quality from a dull, rough, matte surface to a very smooth and shiny one.

で、共通したこのオレンジ色（釉薬部分）は、黄鉄鉱（FeS2　鉄と硫黄の化合物）か？
this orange speckles--iron pyrites?

ほんと、土、不思議！

ラピスラズリなテーブル-Lapis Lazuli color table

10年以上前から
「咲く紫---心の奥の激しいもの」と、呼んでた青い釉薬

「St.Ives の砂浜のテーブル」table at sandy beach
L15cmxW10cmx H4cm x2

土の表面に貝殻おしつけ、砂を埋め込み
青の釉薬かけて焼いたら、砂と溶けあって、なんと

table--with sea shells impressed into clay and
sand embedded in the surface, which fused with the blue glaze

「黄鉄鉱を伴う青金石」そっくり、じゃない？
the blue looks like 'Lazurite with Pyrit'!!
だからラピス（石）ラズリ（青）
"Lapis" means stone and "lazuli" means blue in Latin
あるいは「ウルトラマリーン」（はるか海のかなたから）ultramarine

那須の「石の美術館」で
ひょんな？ことから
「芦野石の粉」さしあげますよ、と
石切場に案内してくださった
わお！

At the stone museum in Nasu,
I asked the staff if I could get some local stone powder.
She kindly guided us to the Ashino-ishi stone quarry.

訊ねてみるものですねえ
"Knock and the door will be opened to you"
Thanks!

なんという見晴らし・雪の那須連山
「石を切って山がなくなったから」と
ふうむ、地球ってやわらかいもんでできてるんだ
nice view--you can sweep the Mountains (Nasu Go Hou),
because the hill itself is losing its form,
while the rock of which it is composed is being cut away.
Hmmmmm, the Earth seems to be composed of soft rock layers.

切り出した石をカットしたり
窯で焼いて、淡いオレンジ色の石材に
へー、焼くんだ！
stones are cut from andesite and even fired in the kilns
for orange colored building materials


トランクからシャベル
石粉と安山岩のかけら
いただいた
さっそく釉薬をつくったので
石もいっしょにこんどの窯焚きで

鉛筆屋さんが考えた、おがくず粘土
pencil manufacturing process produces sawdust
--the industrial waste is utilized as sawdust clay

かわくとやや硬くなり
表面がややざらつく
で、やすりをかけたり、色を塗ったりできる

白の冒険-color and texture come together

白と黒は色じゃない、という
なんで？
"White and black are not colors", they say.
How can they not be colors?





白は、可視光線の全部の波長の光がまじっている

They involve no particular frequency of light,
but all frequencies mixed together.








窯の中で、釉薬と土が溶けあって
結晶し、ガラスでしっかりつつみこむ

in the kiln, the glaze and clay body vitrify and fuse together,
creating a strong crystallized glass structure around the pot





上の三つは、鉄分がほとんどないクリームのような半磁器土
これは、ざらざらした鉄分が少ない荒土
the first three--smooth white clay
this piece--coarse white clay

釉薬はそれぞれ調合が違う「白」

石を砕いてつくった

色は色素というより「肌合い」
color depends on texture rather than pigment

3.5センチほどの「骨太なヤツ」
そりゃ、たいへん、つくるのは
でも、窯から「こんちわ」って
生まれてくると、つい照れちゃうナ

"ka-wa-i-i" ＝pretty/sweet/cute！
-----I rarely use this word, though,
because people utter this particular word all too often.

牛乳パックを開いて四角に切り
陶器用の接着剤をチューブからしぼって
短く切ったワイパーのステンレス棒の先で
練る、そしてピンに塗って、くっつける

and that the handle is comfortable to hold

ろくろで筒をひき 翌朝、取っ手をしっかりつける
throw a cylinder and attach the handle firmly next morning

富士山は春霞に
ぼんやりしちまった

これは「富士山箸置き豆皿」Mt.Fuji shape chopstick rest/plate

精進湖あたりの、こんもり富士？

乾燥中のは
稜線がシャープな河口湖富士？

箸置きは、箸が
直接テーブルにつかない、
テーブルを汚さない、
ころがって落ちない、ようにするため

A chopstick rest (hashioki) is used
to keep chopsticks away from the table and also
to prevent chopsticks from contaminating tables
and rolling off of tables.
