なるほど、粘土は自由だ
四角い底にぐるり一辺は
斜めに、壁立ち上げ6cm
くらいまできたところで
ふむ、これからどうする？

気がつけば形になってる

Clay is flexible when wet.
I had no particular idea.
I just started with a flat
rectangular piece of slab clay.

Rigidity doesn't seem to work.
It is just a result of the two-way
dialogue between the clay and me.

オーブントースターで
水分飛ばすも、白菜で
水っぽくなっちゃった

As expected,
hakusai(napa cabbage)
made the sauce a bit watery.

ハートの雲カップ-Cup: Sky with Heart Cloud

もしも雲、なかったら
なんてたいくつ青い空

A blue sky with no clouds
would be a bit boring,
don't you think?


生まれ、やがて消えゆく
あこがれよ、雲よ

Puffs of cloud just naturally
appear and disappear.

I have been making 'delight
fun ceramic pieces', since I
opened my studio here
at the north foot of Mt.Fuji.
I think I will do the same
from now on.

Life that is painted with
only one color is dull.
These are actually test
pieces of matt glaze.

「ないた赤おに」さん-Ceramic Ogre

赤おにさんと、青おにさん
ページめくってはにんまり
おにがすきになっちゃうよ

I sometimes leaf through
this book, titled "Naita Aka Oni"
"The Red Ogre Who Cried".
The pictures are so touching
I come to love the ogres.


そんなわけで、粘土で
ひょいひょいと「おに」
手の平にのせて話しかけ

The ogres are always in my mind
and a handful of clay has become one.

104才陶芸家-BEATRICE WOOD

1998年､105才
で亡くなる前年
まで工房で製作
を続けたという
ビアトゥリス・ウッドゥ

i read she is a
ceramicist, who
continued working
in her studio to
the age of 104 and
passed away in Ojai,
California nine days
after her 105th birthday on March 12, 1998.

どんなふうに焼けるか、
　もうわくわく」という。
　"I'm madly curious to see
　what is coming out," she says.

10年ほど前に買った 陶皿
薪ストーブの天板のとろ火
蓋かぶせふつふつとろとろ

This ceramic plate I bought
about 10 years ago is perfect
for slow cooking on woodstove.

Risotto:
cooked (black) rice/chopped red onion
maitake mushroom/tomato sauce
squid/olive oil/dried celery/garlic/cheese
soy sauce/nam pla/toubanjan/water

ぺったんこおやき-Oyaki Dumplings

いただいた、「おやき」は
大好きな、おっぺしおやき

そもそもは、囲炉裏の灰に
埋まってじっとみんなの話
聞いていた「お・や・き」

I got some homemade Oyaki as a gift.
The filling is sweet red bean paste.
Every time I have a bite,
I feel like I hear a story.

is also called '春告魚', fish
that tells spring has come.

I've made about 60 so far,
each different from the others.

このまま、が、いい
と、思うこともある

it is exciting to anticipate
changes that occur during
firing, although some pieces
want to stay as they are.

一切がフュージョンする
変化はニュアンスを超え

The piece gets/loses something
significant, more than nuance.

海鼠釉茶碗と卯の花-Okara & Broth

手羽先の煮物と煮こごり
残ってる、おからでしょ
炒って炒って、水飛ばし
なまこ釉の碗に盛ったら.....

I had some chicken broth left,
which seasons okara(soybean lees)
very well.

okara/milk/broth/red pepper/
soy sauce/carrot/chicken/
negi leek/konnyaku/kelp.....

Stir fry until most of the liquid has
evaporated away or to your liking.

苔でも生けてみる
この厳寒に飄々と

It can be a vessel.
How about some moss,
which calmly lives through
this freezing cold?

帽子って、特別な場所に
とってある思い出のよう

　 A hat is like a good old memory,
which is reserved in a special place,
don't you think?

二つ穴にひもを通せば吊せる
Tie a loop of string through
the two holes to hang it up.
