Some people love pipe smoking.
They look happy even when they
are sucking on an empty pipe
just like a baby's pacifier.

がっちりと重たい浅鉢
多分いちばんよく使う

甘エビ、いつもは刺身
頭、ミキサーで砕いて
粉と団子にして揚げる、が
きのうは丸ごと揚げた
痛かったがいい味だっ

Deep fried whole (heads, antennae, shells and all) shrimps
were very tough and difficult to chew, but tasted great!

Unglazed bowl welcomes any food
and yet it has 'certainty'.
The first food was 'salmon belly meat carpaccio'
with mizuna, tofu, purple onion. tomato, cucumber,
asparagus.........

火色たわみ碗-Let Bowl Sag

サヤに籾殻と煙突スス
赤貝で二点をささえて
貝殻かぶせ高台に炭粒

窯からでてきたところ

A bowl fired in saggar
with seashells, rice husks,
charcoal bits, and soot from chimney.
Just out of kiln.



まるで宝永火口の火の色だ
だって噴き出た溶岩の温度
も窯焚きも、1200℃前後

意図、より「たわんじゃった」碗
だが、あらっ、ゆりかごゆらゆら
これもまた愉しからずや

I used two seashells(ark shell) to support
the bowl, so that it should sag a bit.
It was not "a bit", and
the bowl can swing like a cradle.

迷宮きのこ-Mushroom Labyrinth

ひと月ほど前だったかな
にょっきりアミガサタケ
きのうみたらまだ、いた
ひからびても立っていた

食べられる、といわれてもねぇ
怖くて不気味、「きのこの世界」
いろんなきのこ、あっちこっち
まだまだはいりこめそうもない

I found this growing under a fir tree a month ago.
Yesterday it was still there, getting dried out.
Morchella esculenta---they say they are often collected
as delicious, edible mushrooms. Not appetizing in appearance!
Mushrooms are still very mystical.

富士より？宝永火口-Houei Craters on Mt.Fuji

凍った雪にかぶさっ
た火山礫、踏みしめ
富士山斜面つっきる
やがて、深い霧晴れ
ウワオォ

富士山はぐるり
見てたがまさか
こんなん隠れて
た、とは
霧と風のあいま
左に富士山頂
下に火口、空には
岩ツバメ....
腰おろし、こむすび
かきあげ+あぶらみそ、椎茸昆布、梅干し

During our hike the fog got so thick we could hardly see.
Then, all of a sudden, it's gone and I got awed by the volcanic activity.
The latest eruption in 1707 created Mt. Houei (2693m)
at the middle of the south eastern slope of Mt. Fuji.
It has three craters. Oh, I love the lines.

トロブツ丼-Tuna Toro Rice

魚屋さんで、トロブツみつけた
ごはん炊けたら、かるくすし酢
ワカメ、胡瓜、林檎、ブロッコリーの芽
ツマ大根、ワサビ、庭の山椒が香り立つ

TORO, cut from the tuna's belly, on
a bowl of vinegared rice---served with
wakame seaweed, apple, broccoli sprouts,
wasabi horseradish, cucumber, shredded daikon.
Don't forget 'sansho' leaves picked from the garden,
that create a pleasant tingling sensation in the mouth.

　　二度焼成したが、まんなかが、縮れてしまった

We had a pasta lunch at a small
cozy Italian restaurant in Nagoya.
This is 'pork and lotus root' tomato sauce.

窯からとりだした瞬間
おーっとのみこまれる
火の神業か、その釉肌

ほんのり淡いピンクが出れば
いいな、くらいに思っていた
オリーブホワイトマットと名
づけた釉薬、溶け流れ留まる


This hand-pinched bowl was fired last Monday.
Just as I took it out of the kiln,
it absorbed me completely--the glaze run / fusion.
This would be one of a very few pieces
I would like to be with me.

なんとかボリュームアップ、と
軽くマッシュした芋包み揚げた

I wanted to make the most of
inexpensive 'kiriotoshi', wagyu end- cuts.
So I deep fried 'lightly mashed potato
wrapped in bits and pieces of sliced meat'.

大根もおいしいと聞いたので
あぶらみそにして、いっぴん

こごみ、野三つ葉、摘んで
胡麻煎って、擂ってあえた

板皿 slab plate：12cmx16cm
台形に切り取った粘土板
球体にかぶせ、なだらかな丸みをつけた

Hashi-yasume, literally 'chopstick-rest', is a little side dish.
It has a contrasting flavor or texture from the main dish,
so that you can reset your palate.

I read that "Atos Wirtanen,

子どものころは「茄子炒り」（茄子+醤油味）
やがて「あぶらみそ」（茄子+ジャガイモ+ピーマン+味噌味）
そして「みゃーくやーのあぶらみそ」で
ピリ辛「あぶらみそ」、つくってみた

約５万年前の珊瑚が隆起した宮古島
琉球石灰岩の地層で濾過した海水塩
+島唐辛子+味噌+胡麻のおかず味噌

Stir-fried vegetables seasoned with
"Abura-miso" (miso, sugar, sea salt,
pepper, and sesame) from Miyakojima island.

脂がのってやわらかい

Kinmedai, splendid alfonsino,
cut open and lightly air-dried,
with simple spinach white sauce.
Scatter broccoli sprouts over it
before serving.

Notre Dame寺院の奇怪な動物Gargoyle
見上げ、セーヌの畔、歩いて思いついた
河童が水神なら、ガーゴイルは守護神？

いまは、どんな旅していることだろ

A walk along the Seine River,
looking up the Gargoyles on Notre Dame,
inspired me to make these bottles.
Kappa, "river-child", is a type of water sprite
or god of water found in Japanese folklore.
They were sold during my show, and gone.

I eat "tofu" or "aburage" almost every day.
This is the biggest I've ever seen, which is
given as souvenir from Tochio, Niigata.

I painted a field of wild red, yellow, purple and white flowers,

97年生まれのたったひとつの青
粘土板台形に切り、はりあわせ
いまではまるでワタシそのもの

The cobalt glaze was supposed to
become clear and glossy.
The thick layer didn't melt enough
and became blue matt.
I love it so much that this would be
only piece I will keep by my side.

が、えっ？足尾鉱毒事件の
被害民とジャガイモっ？？

When I was going to write about
'Chicken Wing Curry', the title of
a book caught my eyes: "The Potato in World History"
We can't say "It's 'just' potato or the poor man's bread."

I bought mustard flowers
at the farmer's market in neighboring village.
I used them at their peak:
the stems for 'kinpira'--stir-fried with carrot/burdock root
　and glazed with soy sauce, mirin and red pepper
the flowers for 'shiraae'--dressed with mashed tofu

カリフラワーに水溶き地粉+カイエンペッパー+ウコン、まぶして揚げる
馬鈴薯を薪ストーブでやわらくして、半分に割り、チーズのせて、オーブントースターで焼く
あさりを煮立て味噌汁
やっぱ、おうちごはん、だわ

There is just nothing that can compare to home cooked meals.
I don't know why, but eating at restaurant seldom satisfies me.
After coming back from Tokyo,
I cooked dinner at home as usual.

Friends showed me a burgundy(dark purplish red) tea cup,
which they bought at my first ceramic show in Osaka in 1996.
I was happy to see it has aged very nicely, and the color deepened.

is typically served on a plate.
There's no should.
Serve it in a bowl, which would
add spice to the dish.

cherry blossoms in Minobusan.

オレンジピールパン-Milk-free, Oil-free

オレンジをりんごのようにむく
ながぁいリボンの白ワタをそぎ
千切りしてまぜこむと、いい香

This is a milk-free, oil-free rye(25%) bread
with orange peel, chopped walnut, and raisin.
Most of the bread in Japan is so soft and spongy.
I like heavy, crusty country bread, and so I bake.

I wanted to stuff it with 'something' and roll.
How about mashed cooked soybeans and chopped mushroom?
This is a very improvisational recipe,
which turned out yummy.

薪を家の中に運び入れると
隠れてた灰褐色のカメムシ
とは違って
庭の、緑の背中にバッテン

蝉もアメンボも「カメムシ」目、とは.......

It stinks, but the coloring on its back is
a combination of green and brown.
Nature is full of wonder, and
it's also full of all kinds of bugs.

I like the expression

なんどでもひらきたい
絵本のような12分間だ

I finally saw the animated short subject film,
Tsumiki no Ie, "The House of Small Cubes".
This is like a picture book I would like to turn
the pages of repeatedly once in a while.

I make yogurt every day.
The color looks appetizing----
strawberry from Hakata
kiwifruit from Yamanashi.

同じようにコバルトを調合した釉薬だが
赤土/白荒土、還元/酸化焼成でこうも違う

ばんざいサボテン-Banzai Cactus

むかし、夜行列車の窓から
月明かりにぼおぼおと立つ
巨大サボテンの砂漠見てた

San Francisco から San Diego に飛び
バスで国境を越え、鉄道で Mexicali から
Guadalajara （約50時間）

I don't know if it's growing, but I'm sure it is alive.
This funny "Hurray" plant always triggers my old memory
on the night train from Mexicali to Guadalajara---
the desert/ moonlight / cactus silhouette

土石採取で旅した場所
あっちこっち、なので
つなげて、みたかった

赤土で葉をつくり白化粧
素焼きに釉薬を筆塗り中（左）
全体に透明釉かけ本焼き（右）

I travel and collect sand/clay/rocks.
I make test pieces, which are all scattered.
Let's get them well connected!
