When I was going to write about
'Chicken Wing Curry', the title of
a book caught my eyes: "The Potato in World History"
We can't say "It's 'just' potato or the poor man's bread."

大石峠のトンネル抜けて
芦川村、今盛りの菜の花
花を白和え、茎きんぴら

I bought mustard flowers
at the farmer's market in neighboring village.
I used them at their peak:
the stems for 'kinpira'--stir-fried with carrot/burdock root
　and glazed with soy sauce, mirin and red pepper
the flowers for 'shiraae'--dressed with mashed tofu

おうちごはん-Nothing Beats Home Cooking

私のごはん「ぢゃわん」
久しぶりに十六穀ごはん

金目鯛焼いて
白菜+人参+細昆布で即席漬け

カリフラワーに水溶き地粉+カイエンペッパー+ウコン、まぶして揚げる
馬鈴薯を薪ストーブでやわらくして、半分に割り、チーズのせて、オーブントースターで焼く
あさりを煮立て味噌汁
やっぱ、おうちごはん、だわ

There is just nothing that can compare to home cooked meals.
I don't know why, but eating at restaurant seldom satisfies me.
After coming back from Tokyo,
I cooked dinner at home as usual.

Friends showed me a burgundy(dark purplish red) tea cup,
which they bought at my first ceramic show in Osaka in 1996.
I was happy to see it has aged very nicely, and the color deepened.

Stir fried pork with ginger soy sauce
is typically served on a plate.
There's no should.
Serve it in a bowl, which would
add spice to the dish.

オレンジをりんごのようにむく
ながぁいリボンの白ワタをそぎ
千切りしてまぜこむと、いい香

This is a milk-free, oil-free rye(25%) bread
with orange peel, chopped walnut, and raisin.
Most of the bread in Japan is so soft and spongy.
I like heavy, crusty country bread, and so I bake.

なんかのカツがいいな
で、大豆水煮マッシュ

その団子を牛細切れで
くるくる巻いてフライ
即興コンビネーション

黒荒土木灰釉の板皿で

I wanted to stuff it with 'something' and roll.
How about mashed cooked soybeans and chopped mushroom?
This is a very improvisational recipe,
which turned out yummy.

薪を家の中に運び入れると
隠れてた灰褐色のカメムシ
とは違って
庭の、緑の背中にバッテン

蝉もアメンボも「カメムシ」目、とは.......

It stinks, but the coloring on its back is
a combination of green and brown.
Nature is full of wonder, and
it's also full of all kinds of bugs.

This ceramic piece looks exactly like an elephant to Me.
Some people might not agree.
The eyes are thoughtful and gentle, aren't they?

I like the expression
"cook until lightly golden brown",
which means we eat with our eyes and nose, too.
We call it "light fox-color" in Japanese.

I finally saw the animated short subject film,

I make yogurt every day.
The color looks appetizing----

巨大サボテンの砂漠見てた

San Francisco から San Diego に飛び
バスで国境を越え、鉄道で Mexicali から
Guadalajara （約50時間）

I don't know if it's growing, but I'm sure it is alive.
This funny "Hurray" plant always triggers my old memory
on the night train from Mexicali to Guadalajara---
the desert/ moonlight / cactus silhouette

ハナゴンドウ Risso's dolphin:about 10 cm

The newspaper-stuffed dolphin has a tiny hole
on the belly side,
from where the ash comes out after bisque-fired.

I always think that elephants have something philosophical.
A clump of clay has just become an elephant.

Snow outside and refreshing aromatic odor inside.
It's Kusunoki or cinnamomum camphora bark chips.
Suddenly an idea came to me.
I put a white T-shirt with Rafflesia into the reddish hot water
in the cast iron skillet on the wood stove.
Contrast softened. I like it!

コチュジャンマヨソース-Deep Fried Tofu

ホグホグの厚揚げ、だった
焦げ目つけ、辛ソースのせ
オーブントースター上火で

Kさんの話で「韓国の農家の庭のむしろの上に
豪快に干してあるコチュ（赤唐辛子)」想像し
고추장/苦椒醤、つかってみたら、甘辛味噌だ

「豆板醤は、そら豆の味噌+唐辛子の塩漬け---辛い+しょっぱい
コチュジャンは、米/もち米を麹で糖化+唐辛子」---辛い+甘い
ならば、テンメンジャン（小麦粉と麹）は？

I spread kochujan, Korean seasoning and mayonnaise over Atsuage,
and baked it in the toaster oven until golden brown.
Kochujan tasted sweet and hot. What A Combination!

皿に残った、頭と目と骨と尾
みつめていると不思議な気分

秋刀魚などは、骨もいただくと
頭と目玉、に存在感が凝縮する

We often meet a whole fish grilled on the table.
After meat is eaten,
the head, eyes, bones, and tail
come to appear before me.
What an existence!

How about 'sweet' main dish?
:　baked potato, apple, and pork with cheese.
Flavorful seasonings: garlic, cayenne pepper, thyme and sea salt.

I am a hare with one bent ear.
I have a pinkish white fur.
I am different from all the other hares.
Oh, we are all different from each other.

蓮根団子in備前-Lotus Root Dumpling

レンコン、不思議なやつだ
薄切りで、しゃきしゃきっ
おろすとむっちりもっちり

小豆島の帰り、日生（ひなせ）港から
伊部（いんべ）に寄って買った備前碗

The texture of lotus root varies from crunchy
to very starchy and a little sticky.
This is 'grated lotus root dumpling' mixed with
finely chopped shrimp and squid in ankake (starchy sauce).

This bowl is BIZEN-yaki, which I bought in Okayama a long time ago.

青と鉄色の四角い板皿

2--3回焼いてようやく
青の雰囲気27cmx27cm
ずいぶん前の作品、重宝


I always think what color plate makes food more appealing.
How about yellow fried rice and carpaccio on blue plate?
----carrot orange, scallop white, light green spinach/lettuus
'wakame' sea weed dark green, apple red, onion white......
This square plate is made from a slab of clay.
I re-fired it until I was satisfied with this 'blue' and iron 'brown'.

あったかい季節だった
ふいっと、庭に現れて

冬、白い毛になったら
それは 'HARE' らしい、が
見つけたのは雪の足跡

USAGI in Japanese refers to both rabbits and hares.
"Rabbit's fur coat remains its color year-round,
while hares change color from grayish brown
in summer to white in winter."
I saw 'usagi' like this one in the garden in warm season.
In winter i saw only footprints on the snow. I wonder.

スウェーデンとロシアに支配
され続けてきたフィンランド
あこがれ、だけではすまない

Snufkin in the Moomin stories:
Tove Jansson was born into a Swedish minority in Finland,
which might be the key to understand the wanderer's philosophy.

You can eat a lot of fresh vegetables
with deep-fried sanma marinated in
sesame oil, black vinegar, pepper,
tobanjan (Chinese spicy broad bean paste),
soy sauce, and yuzu.
